A study published in 2025 by a prestigious scholarly journal assessed 163,022 species of plants and animals and found that 0.6% of them went extinct over the past 500 years, and “when considering the proportion of extinct species relative to all species” that exist, the “overall extinction frequencies were much lower, by approximately 10-fold.” The study also found that “extinctions related to climate change have not significantly increased over the last approximately 200 years,” and “documented extinctions” haven’t “been accelerating in recent decades, but instead have declined in the largest group of animals and in plants.” This study refutes a slew of grossly exaggerated claims about extinctions that Just Facts has been debunking for more than a decade.
