“Free” Benefits

U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders (I–VT) says that “instead of stealing Greenland from Denmark,” the U.S. should “steal” some of Denmark’s policies, like “free” health care and college, a $22 minimum wage, “paid vacation” for 6 weeks, and “paid parental leave” for 1 year.

IN FACT, the costs of such policies are borne by taxpayers and workers, undercutting take-home pay, incentives to work, career opportunities, and entrepreneurial flexibility. This is largely why the average consumption per person is 48% lower in Denmark than the United States.
