Parental Cannabis Use
Are U.S. parents of children younger than 18 years of age more likely to consume alcohol or cannabis on a daily basis?
Correct Answer
Based on a “nationally representative sample of U.S. residents,” a recent study in the journal Addictive Behaviors found that “parents are now 4 times more likely to use cannabis daily than to use alcohol daily …. 5.2% vs. 1.3%.” The study also found that among parental cannabis users, “the most common form remains smoking (82%),” which doesn’t “align with the notion that parents who use cannabis would prefer products that are easier to conceal from their children, less likely to produce secondhand smoke exposure, or are less potent.” Citing earlier studies, this new study notes that “cannabis use accounts for an increasingly large public health burden, including hospitalizations …. traffic fatalities … and lost productivity….”
