A 2024 IRS study found that the difference between what was legally due in federal taxes for 2022 and what was actually paid was $606 billion. Adjusted for inflation, this costs every household in the U.S. an average of $5,343 per year. As explained by the IRS Taxpayer Advocate, this “tax gap” represents an effective tax on most taxpayers “to subsidize noncompliance by others.”
