Among the 19,069 people murdered in the U.S. during 2024, about 14,531 of them, or 76%, were murdered with firearms. This percentage has been about the same for more than a decade. Contrary to claims that gun control will reduce murders, there is no clear association between gun ownership rates and murder rates, and studies consistently show that incidents of defensive gun use equal and outnumber criminal uses of guns.
