Petroleum is the top source of energy for the United States, providing 35.2% of all energy consumed in 2025. Next is natural gas at 33.9%, followed by coal at 8.5%, nuclear at 8.0%, wind at 3.9%, biofuels at 2.8%, solar at 3.3%, biofuels at 2.5%, hydroelectric at 2.1%, wood at 1.9%, biowaste at 0.4%, and geothermal at 0.2%. Since 1950, petroleum has provided more energy than any other source, even though federal, state, and local governments have discouraged its use through taxes and regulations while heavily subsidizing other sources like wind and solar.
