Roughly 46% of aggravated assaults, 28% of robberies, 27% of rapes, and 58% of murders that were reported to police in 2023 resulted in an alleged offender being identified and acted upon by the criminal justice system. Also, many violent crimes not reported to police are documented by the National Crime Victimization Survey, which shows 1.4 times more aggravated assaults than reported in 2023, or one assault for every 224 people. These figures apply only to a single year, and the DOJ explains that “annual victimization rates alone do not convey the full impact of crime as it affects people. No one would express his or her concern by saying, ‘I am terribly afraid of being mugged between January and December of this year.’ People are worried about the possibility that at some time in their lives they will be robbed or raped or assaulted, or their homes will be burglarized.” The lifetime likelihood of being a victim of such crimes is far greater than for one year.
