A 2021 U.S. Department of Justice study found that people convicted of murder served a median of 17.5 years. This figure applies only to the portion of murderers who are arrested, convicted, and jailed, which has shrunk significantly over the past half century. The percentage of murders in which a suspect was identified and acted upon by the criminal justice system declined from 92% in 1960 to 58% in 2023.
