Tell Me More

In 2005, the Guttmacher Institute — a research organization whose “Guiding Principles” include support for legalized abortion — published a survey of 1,209 women who obtained abortions at 11 U.S. clinics. The survey was “not strictly nationally representative,” but the “social and demographic characteristics of respondents were similar to those of two nationally representative surveys.” When these women were asked to list the “most important” reason they were getting an abortion, 4% said because of their health, 3% said because of possible problems affecting the health of their offspring, less than half of 1% said because of rape, and effectively none said because of incest.” The margin of sampling error for the results of this survey is ± 3 percentage points with at least 95% confidence. The same study found, “Women’s reported reasons for ending pregnancies have been consistent over time. Furthermore, the proportion of women reporting each major reason changed relatively little between 1987 and 2004.”
