In 1970, 6% of jobs in the U.S. held by adults without a high school diploma were held by immigrants. By 2024, this figure had risen to 60%. Many of these jobs are held by illegal immigrants who work off the books and likely depress the wages of low-income Americans. In contrast, the reduced prices from their cheap labor mainly benefit high-income Americans. Since the outset of the Trump administration in January 2025, the number of jobs held by immigrants has fallen by about 1.0 million, while the number of jobs held by people born in the USA has risen about 2.5 million jobs
