During 2022, total government spending for public order, safety, and national defense was $1.5 trillion, or 18% of all federal, state, and local outlays. This amounts to an average of $11,315 for every household in the U.S. and includes military operations, veterans’ benefits, law enforcement, courts, prisons, immigration enforcement, and fire protection. Other major categories of government spending are economic affairs and infrastructure (5%), general government and debt service (16%), and social programs (61%).
