Petroleum is the top source of energy for the United States, providing 35.5% of all energy consumed in 2024. Next is natural gas at 34.3%, followed by nuclear at 8.2%, coal at 7.9%, wind at 3.9%, biofuels at 2.8%, solar at 2.7%, hydroelectric at 2.1%, wood at 1.9%, biowaste at 0.4%, and geothermal at 0.2%. Since 1950, petroleum has provided more energy than any other source, even though federal, state, and local governments have discouraged its use through taxes while heavily subsidizing other sources like wind and solar.
