In 2024, federal, state and local governments collected a combined total of $7.6 trillion in taxes, or an average of $57,414 from every household in the United States. This includes hidden taxes, which are not apparent to the individuals who pay them because they generally don’t appear on purchase receipts, paychecks, or tax returns. Beyond this, governments spent another $1.9 trillion more than they collected in revenues, or an average of $14,374 for every household in the country. This deficit spending is an effective tax on tomorrow’s taxpayers.
