A 2019 scientific survey of public high school social studies teachers asked them, “How important do you think it SHOULD be for your high school to teach students each of the following?” Among the 12 options offered, the most common answer (given by 80% of the teachers) was, “To be tolerant of people and groups who are different from themselves.” For comparison, 66% said, “To embrace the responsibilities of citizenship such as voting and jury duty,” 43% said, “To understand economic principles such as supply and demand and the role of market incentives,” and 32% said, “To know facts (e.g., the location of the fifty states) and dates (e.g., Pearl Harbor).”
