During 2021, federal, state and local governments spent $232 billion on higher education, not including additional government funding of university research, university hospitals, and student loans. This $232 billion amounts to $1,796 for every household in the United States. It also amounts to 90% of spending by public and private colleges on all functions that directly contribute to the education of students and the general public.
