Correct Answer

Per the U.S. Army, "America's most popular rifle - the AR-15 - is often portrayed as being something it is not. Probably one of the more popular myths is that the 'AR' stands for 'assault rifle' or 'automatic rifle.' It actually stands for 'Armalite Rifle,' after the company that developed it in the 1950s." In 1988, the founder of a prominent gun control organization wrote that calling these semi-automatic guns "assault weapons" would exploit the "public's confusion over fully automatic machine guns" and thereby "increase the chance of public support for restrictions on these weapons." Journalists and politicians have done this en masse, and yesterday on Fox News, Geraldo Rivera falsely stated that the AR-15 is a "machine gun" and that the "AR" stands for "automatic rifle."
