Since the mid-1980s, the government of Cuba has been harboring JoAnne Chesimard, who now goes by the name "Assata Shakur." Per the FBI, "In 1977, Chesimard was found guilty of first degree murder" for her role in killing NJ State Trooper Werner Foerster "execution-style at point-blank range." She was convicted and "sentenced to life in prison" but escaped "and lived underground before being located in Cuba in 1984." She is currently among the FBI's most-wanted terrorists, and "The FBI is offering a reward of up to $1,000,000 for information directly leading to" her apprehension. The home page of the group "Black Lives Matter at School" is adorned with a quote from Shakur, and the Women's March tweeted "Happy birthday to the revolutionary #AssataShakur" in 2017. In 2015, President Barack Obama rescinded Cuba's designation as a "State Sponsor of Terrorism" while disregarding calls to demand the return of Chesimard.
