Per a 2011 paper published in the journal PLoS One, a long-term population-based controlled study of 324 sex-reassigned persons in Sweden found that the suicide rate was 19 times higher for these individuals than the general population. This result has a confidence interval of 5.8 to 62.9. 1972, Sweden became "the first country in the world to legally allow gender change," and in 1979, its National Board of Health and Welfare decided that "homosexuality is no longer a mental disorder." In 2013, the Swedish government created a webpage declaring that it is "one of the most gay-friendly countries in the world" and that the 2013 "Stockholm Pride parade had an estimated 60,000 participants and 600,000 spectators, one of several signs that LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) people are a welcomed part of Swedish society."
