Per the World Book Encyclopedia, James Madison is "often called the Father of the Constitution," because he "played a leading role in the Constitutional Convention of 1787, where he helped design the checks and balances that operate among Congress, the president, and the Supreme Court." He was also the primary author of the Bill of Rights and a staunch opponent of slavery, which he called "the most oppressive dominion ever exercised by man over man."
