Among the 10.1 million people who received Social Security disability payments in December of 2017, 35% obtained these benefits for mental disorders, 29% for diseases of the musculoskeletal system, and 4% for injuries. Between 1965 and 2018, the U.S. population grew by 63%. During the same period, the number of people receiving disability benefits increased by 484%.
