On which of the following items does the federal government spend the most money?
In 2018, the federal government spent $521 billion on national debt interest. This was 4.9 times more than the $106.1 billion it spent on education and 7.6 times more than the $68.4 billion it spent on Food Stamps. Due to historically low interest rates, interest payments on the national debt are currently half of what they will be if rates return to their average level for the past half century.
