Question of the Day

Has the amount of land area in the world increased or decreased since 1985?

Correct Answer

Tell Me More

Per a study published by the journal Nature Climate Change in 2016, the amount of land area in the world increased by about 22,400 square miles (58,000 square km) from 1985 to 2015. Although the average global sea level has been generally rising since 1860 or earlier, manmade and natural factors have led to a net gain in land area since 1985 or earlier. As one of the study's coauthors stated, "We expected that the coast would start to retreat due to sea level rise, but the most surprising thing is that the coasts are growing all over the world."
