If all government funding to U.S. colleges and universities were spent only on education (not housing, buildings, food, administration, etc.), what portion of higher education in the U.S. would be funded by government?
During 2017, federal, state and local governments spent $197 billion on higher education. This amounts to 80% of all spending by public and private colleges on functions that directly contribute to the education of students and the general public, including instruction, public service, and academic support.
