Per the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 42% of all U.S. forestland is owned by federal, state, local governments, while 58 percent is "privately owned" by "individuals, families, Native American tribes, partnerships, corporations, nongovernment organizations, and other private groups." The total forestland in the U.S. is 766 million acres, or about 33% of the total U.S. land area of 2.3 billion acres.
