Roughly 38% all civilian, noninstitutionalized adults in the U.S. reported using prescription opioids in 2015. Per the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, "During 2015, drug overdoses accounted for 52,404 U.S. deaths, including 33,091 (63.1%) that involved an opioid [prescription and non-prescription]." For comparison, 36,161 motor vehicle deaths and 36,252 firearm-related deaths occurred in 2015.
