In 2016, 3% of all employees in the U.S. earned the federal minimum wage or below. For employees aged 16 to 19, the rate was 10%%. For employees aged 25 and older, the rate was 2%. These figures don't account for overtime pay, tips, or commissions. Some workers earn below the federal minimum wage, because the law has exceptions that "apply under specific circumstances to workers with disabilities, full-time students, youth under age 20 in their first 90 consecutive calendar days of employment, tipped employees and student-learners."
