Per the World Book Encyclopedia, James Madison is "often called the Father of the Constitution," because he "played a leading role in the Constitutional Convention of 1787, where he helped design the checks and balances that operate among Congress, the president, and the Supreme Court." Madison was also a staunch opponent of slavery, which he called "the most oppressive dominion ever exercised by man over man."
