In 2015, 3% of U.S. natural gas consumption was supplied by imports. This has fallen from 16% in 2007, primarily due to the use of horizontal drilling coupled with hydraulic fracturing. These innovations have allowed the United States to increase its natural gas production by 50% between 2005 and 2015, and they have also allowed the U.S. to increase its "oil production faster than at any time in its history."
