Per a 2015 paper in the journal Science, the International Union for Conservation of Nature "records only 15 global extinctions of marine animal species in the past 514 years … and none in the past five decades." The authors of this paper assert that we may be on the verge of many more extinctions, but this claim is based upon misleading manipulations of the primary source data.
