Among the 34 advanced nations comprising the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, only France and possibly Switzerland spend more than the U.S. Although the U.S. ranks 22nd in government social spending, it ranks 2nd or 3rd in total social spending, because private social spending in the U.S. is much higher than in any other nation.
