According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, state and local governments spend an average of $59.42 per contract-hour worked to employ public school teachers. This does not account for the added time that teachers work beyond their contract hours to perform lesson preparation and other nonclassroom activities. It also does not account for the costs of some retirement benefits.
