Species Extinctions

A prestigious scholarly journal has published stunning new research on species extinctions which found that:

  • only about 0.06% of the earth’s animal and plant species have gone extinct over the past 500 years.
  • “extinctions related to climate change have not significantly increased over the last approximately 200 years.”
  • “documented extinctions have” not “been accelerating in recent decades, but instead have declined in the largest group of animals and in plants.”

The new research, published by the Proceedings of the Royal Society, accords with facts that Just Facts published more than a decade ago in 2015 and 2011. Contrary to certain scholars and many media outlets, Just Facts documented copious facts that revealed:

  • “extinction rates” have not “increased over the last two centuries.”
  • “the modern rate of extinctions is modest and unalarming.”
  • “the habit of embellishing environmental threats is an ongoing problem among scientists and environmentalists.”
