U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D–MA) claims that “abortion is health care.”

IN FACT, the vast bulk of abortions don’t improve health or may worsen it, and every abortion kills an innocent, biologically irreplaceable human being. Here are the specifics:

  • When the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute surveyed 1,209 woman at 11 abortion clinics in 2004, 4% of them said that their main reason for getting an abortion was their personal health, 3% said it was because of possible problems affecting the health of their unborn child, and less than 1% said it was because of rape or incest.
  • Studies published by the European Journal of Public Health, the Southern Medical Journal, and the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology found that women who have abortions are 45% to 191% more likely to die young than those who deliver their children.
  • A 2007 paper in the Journal of Reproductive Medicine cites 59 studies that exhibit a statistically significant association between abortion and the risk of premature births in subsequent pregnancies, which increases children’s risks for early death, cerebral palsy, blindness, deafness and other health complications.
  • The majority of more than 30 scientific studies examining abortion and mental health show significantly worse mental health outcomes for woman who have abortions.
  • Because association doesn’t prove causation, the studies above cannot prove that abortions caused the early deaths and health issues, but they open the door to this possibility and weigh against Warren’s assertion about abortion being healthcare.
  • The sciences of embryology, genetics, and molecular biology prove that every new human life begins at fertilization, and clinical literature is explicit about this fact.
  • With the exception of identical twins, once a woman conceives a pre-birth human, the genetic odds against her conceiving the same one again are greater than 10^600 to one. In comparison, there are roughly 10^80 atoms in the known universe.
  • Among identical twins with the same DNA, the science of epigenetics shows that they still have differences that make each of them biologically unique.
  • Per Cambridge Learner’s Dictionary, the “innocent” are “not guilty of committing a crime,” as is the case with everyone before birth.
  • Per the textbook Larsen’s Human Embryology, “All of us were once human embryos” with “our own prenatal origins and experiences.” Thus, the abortion of any one of us wouldn’t have just killed an embryo or fetus — but an innocent irreplaceable human.
