Costs of Weather Disasters
U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders (I–VT) claims that “climate change is making extreme weather disasters more frequent and severe” based on a chart of NOAA data on “U.S. Billion-Dollar Disasters” since 1980.
IN FACT, NOAA’s dataset fails to account for population growth or economic development. Two papers published by academic journals have found no trends in U.S. economic damages from hurricanes since 1900 when accounting for population growth and economic development.
