New York Governor Kathy Hochul (D) claims that the perpetrator of the Manhattan mass shooting “used an AR-15–style assault rifle,” a “weapon of war.”

IN FACT, an AR-15 is not an “assault rifle” or “weapon of war” but a common semi-automatic rifle used by citizens for hunting and home defense. AR-15s share some characteristics with military firearms but lack their defining feature — the ability to fire multiple bullets with the single pull of a trigger.
