IN FACT, global hurricane frequency and intensity have been generally level since 1970, and a 2021 paper in the journal Nature Communications found “no significant increases” in Atlantic hurricanes or major hurricanes since 1878. NPR’s claim is based on a climate model, a notoriously unreliable type of study.
