Immigrant Arrests & Detention
U.S. Congressman Robert Garcia (D–CA) is “demanding that Donald Trump stop arresting and detaining people with no criminal records across Southeast Los Angeles.”
IN FACT, crossing the border illegally is a criminal offense, all types of suspected perpetrators are commonly arrested before they have criminal records, and federal law allows ICE to arrest and temporarily detain aliens who are unlawfully in the U.S. until they leave or are removed.
Moreover, sanctuary cities like Los Angeles release convicted criminals from jails without turning them over to ICE, which forces ICE to enter immigrant communities to apprehend them and increases the odds of collateral arrests of illegal immigrants without criminal records.
