U.S. Senate Democrat Leader Chuck Schumer claims that “Donald Trump and Linda McMahon are trying to dismantle public education in America, firing thousands of workers and defunding our schools.”
IN FACT, Trump and McMahon didn’t fire educators but bureaucrats at the U.S. Department of Education in order to “promote efficiency and accountability and to ensure resources are directed where they matter most — to students, parents, and teachers.”
National average math and reading scores for 17-year olds have been stagnant since the Department of Education was founded in 1979 and could be significantly worse because national assessments on 17-year-olds haven’t been conducted since 2012. Since then, younger students have experienced substantial declines in math and reading, particularly in the wake of school closures and other ill-informed Covid-19 policies.
